Evelyn Segal Kaufman, nee Berkowitz, 98, beloved wife of the late Fremont M. Kaufman and the late Carl F. Segal; loving mother of Lewis (Gail) Segal, MD, and Sara Lee Segal (Steven) Loevy; cherished grandmother of Carl (Tracy) Segal, Jonathan (Kirsten) Segal, MD, and Nathaniel (Amy) Loevy; adored great grandmother of Benjamin, Jacob, Lucille and Matthew Segal, and Jake Loevy; dear stepmother of Ruth Kaufman; devoted daughter of the late Louis and Dora; fond sister of the late Alfred (Jeanne) Berkowitz and the late Pauline (the late Sidney) Piel; treasured aunt of the late Earl Segal, Phoebe Shaw, the late Sarge Holtzman, Eleanor (Ray) Six, MD, Sara Jean Segal, David (Michelle) Piel and Richard Piel; Evelyn was the first woman to chair the Board of Governors’ Universities for the State of Illinois; engaged officer of ORT International and the League of Women Voters; active member of Congregation B’nai Zion, Congregation B’nai Moshe and Beth Emet: The Free Synagogue. Chapel service 2:30 PM at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 West Rand Road, Arlington Heights. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The SelfHelp Home or ORT International. I am very sad to hear about the death of Evelyn Segal Kaufman. As a friend of Sara from grammer school, I remember being in the Sara’s home quite a bit and accompining the family on a picnic. Evelyn was a people’s person and set a good example to follow. My condolances to Sara and the family.

My sincere sympathy to Mrs. Kaufman’s family.

She loved all of you so very much and was proud of who you are and what you accomplished. It was my pleasure to work with, learn from and grow while Mrs. Kaufman was a member of the Illinois Board of Governors Universities. She was a role model and mentor and is forever apart of my life. Her wit, intelligence and love of life were among her many talents. I am so grateful to have known her.
